It isn’t simple to create a logo. A logo is a brand’s identity.
It is not a simple name placed in a square box. A logo speaks about the company, it creates the first impression of the company in a viewer. Brand logos are in high demand with companies spending millions to impact a customer and trying to sell their goods through the perception that the logo creates. So creating a custom logo design needs lot of intuition and thought. Given below are some tips one could keep in mind when designing it.
1. A logo should stand out in the crowd
Easier said than done! This isn’t easy as there are so many logos in the market that one can be influenced by them some way or the other. But it is very important to create something that ‘will be’ an original and for that to happen thinking-out-of-the-box is necessary.
Designers can check if their logos have been influenced through a logo plagiarism checking site called Logo Thief. That way they can be rest assured how much has been influenced and what they need to change.
2. A logo should speak about the brand
What is the brand about? What is the story behind the brand? Which audience does the brand cater to? These are the answers that a designer should convey through a logo. A designer can create a story of the brand or a mood board that the brand conveys. This way the imagery would have deeper meaning for the logo to suit the brand.
Take a look at some of the popular logos we come across daily. Why are they successful? These logos talk about the history of the brand. History appeals to everyone and we all love stories. A logo should tell the story about the brand. And it should be said in the most simplest way possible.
3. Colour of the logo should be enticing
Now that you know that a story needs to be told, you also have to think of a colour to paint the story in. The colour plays the most visually-impacting part in the design of the logo. Bright colours though eye-catching could convey the message of being pushy, subtle tones could lose themselves in the crowd. Choosing the right colour that suits the story of the brand is the best option possible.
Designers refer to ‘The science behind colours’ for better understanding of what they need.
4. A logo should be easy to understand
You wouldn’t like it if someone takes ages to understand what your logo is all about. A logo has to be simple enough for anyone and everyone to understand. It should also be easily transferable onto any medium.
In short it must look great on paper and on multiple devices too. Remember this is the digital age and you have consumers looking at brands through apps, print, avatars and paper. So the design should suit every medium and should look the same when slightly altered through time.
5. Lastly but most importantly a logo takes time to catch on
Yes, brands have taken years to become successful. So for a logo to stay in the minds of the people too will take time. Never expect a logo to be an overnight success as it depends on the product and the market that it caters to. Patience and integrity are the key words for a logo to catch on. So do your best and let time work its magic.
